The key to effective security is all about the layers:  If you use a software firewall, keep your antivirus software up-to-date, and avoid programs that you receive via e-mail or instant messaging, your chances of stopping something from doing harm is good.

Passwords are the keys to most systems today.  A strong password, along with a good password policy that incorporates length requirements, character requirements, expiration cycles, history lists, and dictionary checks, are steps in the right direction.

“In the end, though, security is really about how people behave on-line and off.  With all the money and time invested in the latest security products, none of that matters if users continue to click on innocent looking email attachments, plugging their infected home machines into the corporate network, or get fooled by legitimate looking pop-ups, warnings, and web pages.  Security policies, then, should top your to-do list for the coming year and end-users must adhere to those policies and suffer stiff consequences if they don’t.”
